A Western Reserve Public Media War and Peace Project
Watch Northeast Ohio War Stories

Western Reserve Public Media presents northeast Ohioans’ videotaped oral histories about their memories of World War II. The videotapes are the work of both local residents and Western Reserve Public Media.

In August of 2007, the station invited community members to attend free local workshops that gave instruction on how to create videotaped oral histories. Then workshop attendees — and others who were interested in the project — interviewed local people who agreed to share their memories of life during World War II. They then completed a videotape submission process to have their work presented here.

Western Reserve Public Media also helped preserve World War II stories by interviewing local residents in Canton and Canfield. The station videotaped 13 people on Thursday, Aug. 9 at Canton's VFS Post 3747 and Canfield's War Vet Museum. Many were veterans of the war, and the remainder had memorable stateside experiences.

The collection of interviews is presented below, and some are part of the Western Reserve Public Media production Northeast Ohio: The War.

All of the videotape submissions will be forwarded to the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project, which is conducting a national effort to collect and preserve memories of World War II.

For more information on collecting oral histories, visit Western Reserve Public Media’s resource page.

Many more oral histories will be posted here over the next few weeks. Check back often to see our latest additions.
